Since the early 1990s, Ibiza has been widely regarded
as the undisputed nightclubbing capital of Europe; a hedonistic, wild
partying island where the young never sleep, running amok and dancing
themselves into oblivion! Although there is still certainly an element
of truth in this, things have calmed down somewhat as Ibiza has moved
forward with the times. It is still a great place to visit if you
enjoy clubbing (and it still has the world's largest club: Privilege,
capacity 10,000!), but the real Ibiza - so long seemingly neglected
or hidden behind the dominant brashness of club culture - has forced
itself back to the front of the queue, attracting holidaymakers who
have little or no inclination to hit the nightspots.
The real Ibiza is a tranquil and beautiful place of pretty villages,
medieval buildings, pine forests, almond trees, olives, figs, sunshine
and stunning beaches lapped by clear blue sea. This is how it was
long before the dance beat started, and how it will remain long after
it stops. But the laid-back population of just 110,000 warmly embraces
all-comers and will tell you that, even though it can be a little
noisy sometimes, they are extremely grateful for the considerable
revenue the club scene generates for the island!
A magnificent coastline of 125 miles is trimmed with over 50 lovely
beaches that constitute almost a quarter of it. An average of 300
days sunshine per year and a classic Mediterranean climate ensure
that Ibiza is perfect for a beach holiday. The southeast of Ibiza
is noted for its beaches, especially the stretch between Cala de Santa
Vicent and Santa Eularia des Riu, but there are many beaches all around
Ibiza that can be recommended. Particularly popular with families
are the beaches at the friendly resorts of Cata Llonga and Platja
des Niu Blau; those in search of a quiet, picturesque spot need look
no further than Cala be Boix; naturists are catered for at Cala es
Figueral and there are many livelier stretches of sand with beach
bars and cafés for those who wish to keep the mood of the evenings
simmering during the daytime!
Concerning history and culture, head first for Ibiza Town. Dominated
by its magnificent cathedral, Ibiza Town is the enchanting island
capital, and one of the most impeccably-preserved medieval towns in
Europe. Clustered on a hillside overlooking Ibiza port, it's an atmospheric
maze of twisting, cobbled lanes full of excellent shopping, dining
and nightlife. It's very much a walking town that can take days to
fully discover, but it is certainly worth spending time doing so.
For a delightful insight into traditional Ibiza, the miniscule village
of Poblado de Balafia is a must. Perhaps more accurately described
as a hamlet, Poblado consists of just five houses of traditional design
and is one of the island's quirkier attractions. Another would have
to be Ponylandia, a catch-all entertainment and shopping area including
horse rides and a wealth of other activities for children amongst
the bric-a-brac and handicraft stalls of the flea market!
As for natural attractions, you do not need to go far in Ibiza to
see something beautiful. The famous Es Vedrá Rock is unmissable
- literally, as it towers 400 metres from the sea! Apparently where
a crazy hermit once called home, the rock seems to come alive with
the beautiful colours it takes on at sunset. Beneath the ground, the
stunning cave Cova d'es Culleram should be considered essential. This
ancient chamber was full of Carthaginian treasure when discovered
in 1907, which is now displayed in the superb Museo Arqueológic
- one of many excellent museums and art galleries on Ibiza.
